Goals on Monday

Wednesday 4th May 2005                                             They think it's all over...It is now.

HEARTS BRIGHT START FADES LIKE A LINNELL TEE SHOT ON THE 1ST.

By Nick Hancock

Sacred Heart 2 Holmesfield 5

The Hearts heroes tried to fool Holmesfield before the last game of the season by moving the pitch to the HSBC sports ground, but to no avail. Indeed the Hearts didn’t even manage to fool the bumper crowd that turned up to watch the match. The game had added spice which saw Holmesfield needing all 3 points to secure promotion, with the Chapleltown team on the sidelines waiting for Holmesfield to slip up, there was extra pressure on the Hearts to perform.

Taylor was almost late for kick-off taking 16 attempts to park the smallest car in the world in a space the size of an international swimming pool with turning circles that could have been mastered by Stace in the 18 yard box.

Again for the 17th billion time this season there were sweeping changes to the Hearts line-up, seeing Big Nev back in goal, Manager Linnell fancied a run at full back in place of the delayed Danny Wooffinden who over ran his shower time. Thompson replaced the N64 who turned up at Aurora (late). Ryan Taylor got a start in midfield for the absent Danny Connelly, while Micky Kay started up front with Cartridge after Bum announced he was still too busy with his election (erection) campaign.

Hearts got off to a flyer with 2 quick goals from their forwards, Mick K from an acute angle after rounding the keeper and Cartridge lifted the ball over the advancing keeper from a Taylor through ball for his 32nd of the season. By now the crowd were in raptures singing Cartridge’s name time and time again, the ‘Anfield-like’ support obviously got to the Hearts players who began showing signs of lacking composure whilst in possession, by half time the visitors had got a grip on the game and took a 3-2 lead aided by some sloppy (seconds for Wes) Hearts defending.

Half time:  Hearts 2 HWR 3

Only Holmesfield and Mark Thompson turned up for the second half and they scored 2 more goals .Thompson finding the bottom corner with a fine diving header, it was only after his Lua-Lua goal celebration that someone pointed out to the ‘Playa’ that he’d scored at the wrong end. The result secured promotion for the visitors and Hearts just missed out on a European place by 11 league tables and the fact they play on Sundays didn’t help their chances much either.

4 Managers took charge at certain times through the season, Linnell, Stacey, Cartridge and Taylor. Only Cartridge maintained a 100% record, albeit for only 2 games.

Hearts used 7 different keepers during the season, Bailey, Stacey, Cutts, Whitby, Cartridge, Thompson and Belk.

Hearts used 29 different players during the season, 12 of whom made their debuts, 2 people have left (but only 1 of them knows about it)

3 Ex-hearts players played against their old team this season – all 3 scored goals against the Hearts, Brooksbank, Simpson (Boo-hiss) and O’Leary.
